Doctor of Professional Studies (DPS)

At EIMT, the Doctor of Professional Studies is designed for experienced professionals who wish to reach a higher level of mastery within their area of specialisation while continuing to work. Graduates apply the knowledge they gain directly to the institutions and communities they serve.

The program is delivered by highly qualified and credentialed faculty who combine current academic scholarship with substantial professional experience. In each module, faculty share their expertise in contemporary research debates within their discipline, enabling DPS candidates to understand where the field is moving and how that scholarship translates into practice.

The DPS is a minimum thirty-six-month program developed for high-achieving professionals who wish to extend their specialised education through original, applied research. It is structured across three academic years of 60 ECTS each: the first year is dedicated to advanced coursework and the approved research proposal, while the second and third years are dedicated to supervised research and the doctoral thesis. The program offers the next generation of senior practitioners, educators, researchers, curators, clinicians and policy leaders a curriculum that pairs discipline-specific study with advanced research methods.

The European Institute of Management and Technology delivers the DPS entirely online. The course is rigorously structured and meets multiple quality standards. As the program is offered online, multiple batches may be running or admitted at the same time. All batches operate in a flexible mode, allowing candidates to begin or postpone their studies as their circumstances require. Every DPS candidate receives extensive guidance from an assigned supervisor or research faculty member and can draw additional support from the EIMT alumni community and international expert group.

Individual Study Plan | Practitioner Based Project/Dissertation:

The first step for DPS scholars is to draft a preliminary research proposal — an 8–10 page document setting out the essential elements of your intended doctoral study. We provide a pre-defined template to speed up the process. You are advised to prepare and submit your initial research proposal within the first month of enrolment; your supervisor or research faculty will then provide detailed feedback.

You may consider the following approaches when selecting a topic for your doctoral project:

  • A single-case or single-site study evaluating a new or innovative intervention, practice, curriculum, exhibition, service or program.
  • An Action Research or Participatory Action Research project.
  • A program, policy or curriculum evaluation.
  • A field study testing theoretical predictions in a live professional setting.
  • A survey study examining opinions, attitudes, beliefs or practices within a discipline or profession.
  • A practice-led or practice-based inquiry, including studio, performance, curatorial or creative-writing methodologies accompanied by a critical commentary.
  • An archival, textual, historical or documentary study addressing a question of contemporary professional relevance.
  • A process, service or institutional improvement study.

As these examples indicate, every project requires extensive knowledge of the literature in the relevant subject area, together with sophistication in how the study is designed, defended and presented. Conducting such projects builds genuine expertise in your focus area and prepares you to work as an effective practitioner-scholar. To that end, we recommend selecting a topic in which you already hold substantial practical experience.
